The AFBE-UK Gala & Awards night celebrates the growing diversity of engineering landscape and the contribution of companies and individuals to the industry. Entries are open to all individuals and UK-registered companies within the engineering sectors. Bringing an unmatched level of recognition in front of industry peers, the awards provide companies and individuals with a springboard for growth, as well as inspiring the next generation and the industry to keep evolving.

The gala which has been held every other year in Scotland since 2012 continues to be the premier networking event for business leaders, government officials, professionals and students of ethnic minority backgrounds, the academia and organisations promoting diversity and STEM careers. The event will begin with a networking reception where guests will be welcomed to a drinks reception. This will be followed by multicultural entertainment.

Award Categories

This award is run by the AFBE UK with the express purpose of recognizing any individual or Organisation committed to championing STEM. Nomination can be made by the individual applying or a third party. This nomination should be an acknowledgement of the person or Organisation's contributions and commitment to widening participation in STEM. Open to anyone working in any sector.

  • -Evidence of a personal interest in STEM.
  • -Evidence of a commitment to widening participation in it's broadest sense within STEM.

AFBE Gala Wood

This Award is run by the AFBE-UK Scotland with the expressive purpose of encouraging and recognizing an outstanding young engineer from the BME community. This professional should be nominated by his/her company. This nomination should be an acknowledgement of this member's impact on the company's results. Award's eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • -Engineer from BME origins employed in any field.
  • -Holds Bachelor and/or Master's degree in engineering or a related field.
  • -Under 10 years post-graduation experience with outstanding contribution to current team's objectives.
  • -Age limit 35 years

This award recognizes the vital role mentors play in passing on their knowledge and expertise to the next generation of people in the engineering sector, and the extraordinary commitment of these individuals to learning and improvement across the industry.

This award is run by AFBE-UK with the express purpose of encouraging and recognizing an outstanding leader of BME origin.

Nominations can be made by the individual applying or a third party. This nomination should be an acknowledgment of the dynamism and impact of this leader.

  • -Generally, with at least 10 years of experience
  • -Evidence of dynamism and daring to be different or challenge the status quo.
  • -Cutting-edge inventions, process improvements, digital innovations, or joint ventures.

With three decades of experience garnered in the pharmaceuticals, oil, gas and broader energy industries, Craig is a seasoned and proven leader. He has worked at Wood for almost two decades and was previously Executive President of the company’s global Operations business. Hiran started her career in Marketing and has worked for several large organisations, including Which mMagazine and Barclays. Since October 2022 Ian has been an independent consultant in the Energy Transition space. He obtained an M.Eng. in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot Watt University (1983), and an MBA through the Open University (1994). He is also a Fellow of the UK Energy Institute and is a Chartered Petroleum Engineer. He has long been active with the Society of Petroleum Engineers including 2 four years periods as Chair of the SPE Aberdeen Section and as a Regional Director on the SPE International Board. Dr Alix Thom joined Offshore Energies UK (previously Oil & Gas UK) in December 2011 as Skills and Employment Issues Manager. In her current role, Alix is responsible for facilitating the development of industry-wide employment related policy for OEUK’s 400 member companies. Alix is also theme lead for the implementation of the People and Skills element of the North Sea Transition Deal, agreed in 2021 with the UK government. This includes retaining talent in the oil and gas industry whilst facilitating the transition of people to other energy sectors, as well as leading on diversity and inclusion. Alix is an experienced employee relations specialist with a proven track record in major and independent exploration and production companies, including BP, Cairn Energy and EnQuest, as well as Wood Group and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA). A Fellow of the CIPD and holder of the Distinguished Badge of Merit, Alix is also a member of the Executive Board of the IPA (Involvement and Participation Association) and an Alumna of the Advanced HR Executive Programme, Michigan University.
